Annual Lifeboat Davit & Winch Inspection
The day began calm and clear — ideal conditions for carrying out the annual inspection of the lifeboat davit and winch system, a routine but essential part of our vessel’s safety maintenance plan.
The team gathered on deck with tools and checklists in hand, following the procedures outlined under SOLAS Chapter III, IMO MSC.1/Circ.1206/Rev.1, and LSA Code regulations for periodic inspection and maintenance of lifesaving appliances. Every step was performed in compliance with the manufacturer’s maintenance manual and flag-state requirements.
We started with the lifeboat and davit assembly, checking the structural condition, sheaves, wires, and securing arrangements. All moving parts were cleaned, lubricated, and tested for smooth operation. The on-load release mechanism and manual release system were tested to verify proper engagement and reset as per regulation.
Next came the winch inspection. The casing and drum showed signs of corrosion, so we carried out cleaning and surface treatment. The electric motor, brake assembly, and limit switches were inspected and tested in accordance with LSA testing procedures. Wiring continuity and insulation resistance were checked to ensure electrical reliability.
Once reassembled, a function test was conducted — lowering and hoisting the lifeboat under load to confirm proper synchronization of winch and davit operation. The lifeboat propeller and control system were also inspected to verify readiness for emergency deployment.
All findings were recorded in the LSA Maintenance Log, signed, and verified as per SOLAS and IMO requirements.
By the end of the day, the inspection was complete — another routine task carried out with precision, ensuring our lifesaving appliances remain reliable, compliant, and ready for immediate use.
