Why Fixed Foam Systems Need Regular Inspection
Fixed Foam Systems must be ready to perform without hesitation the moment a fire breaks out. Corrosion in a concentrate tank, a clogged nozzle, or a proportioning system that’s drifted out of calibration can all mean the difference between a contained fire and a catastrophic one. Regular, documented inspection is how shipowners and operators verify that the system will do its job when it matters most.
The IMO Regulatory Framework: MSC.1/Circ.1312
The International Maritime Organization sets out the inspection, testing, and maintenance requirements for Fixed Foam Systems in MSC.1/Circ.1312. Under this circular, Fixed Foam Systems must undergo a comprehensive five-yearly inspection, carried out by a qualified and authorized surveyor with the expertise to assess the system accurately.
What the Five-Yearly Inspection Covers
A compliant five-yearly inspection is a full system check, not a spot check. Our surveyors work through each of the following:
- Fixed Foam Generators — confirming they’re in good condition and can deliver the required foam output during an emergency.
- Foam Concentrate Tanks — checking for corrosion or damage, and confirming the correct type and quantity of concentrate is on board.
- Foam Proportioning System — verifying it delivers the correct ratio of foam concentrate to water.
- Distribution System — inspecting the piping and distribution network for condition and effective coverage of the protected area.
- Discharge Devices — checking foam nozzles and monitors for blockages or damage.
- Control System — testing that the system activates correctly in a fire scenario.
- Instructions & Documentation — confirming onboard documentation is current and reflects the system’s actual configuration.

What Happens After the Inspection
